Feeding
program at the homeless shelter in San Jose
We have been preparing hot lunches/breakfast for
the homeless since 1995. We do this about every month. Adult
members as well as teenagers in the Yuva Kendra classes have been
volunteering for this program. We cook and serve a vegetarian meal for
the homeless people staying in the shelter. This shelter houses
families as well as single people. We usually serve about 120-150
people. About 10-15 volunteers are needed to handle this task. This is
a great way to give back to the community and is much appreciated by
the staff running the shelter.

that we know is popular - soups, pasta, pizza, taco casserole, stir fry
vegetables, desserts. We buy the groceries the previous day. On the day
of the Breakfast Sewa we meet at 5:00am in the kitchen at the shelter.
We prepare the meal and then start serving at 6:30. We are normally
done by 7am.

Lunch Bag sewa by Families
Sewa contact : Kalyani
Penta (k_penta@yahoo.com)
During this winter's
sleeping bag sewa (December 2008) we came across the need for
bagged lunches for the transient people at the shelter. The object is
to provide a portable meal for shelters that cannot house and serve hot
lunches. This Sewa is hosted by a mission host family with support by
other sewaks [mission members, and Bala Vihar children]. The bagged
lunch consisting of a sandwich, fruit, snack and juice is assembled by
the sewaks and brought to a distribution center. This event takes place every second sunday
afternoon of a month.
You are welcome to join a sewa, host a sewa and/or sponsor the event.
