About Us
Swami Chinmayananda blessed our effort when
we acquired the property on Park Avenue in San Jose in 1987. He named it Sandeepany
San Jose. He sent us the best teacher he then had in India, Swami Tejomayananda,
to be the first acharya of Sandeepany San Jose from 1989 - 1993. Swami Chinmayananda
also formally formed the organization, Chinmaya Mission San Jose in 1992.
Swami Tejomayananda taught the Upanishads,
the Bhagavad Gita, the Ramayana and Srimad Bhagavatam at Sandeepany on a weekly basis.
His lectures on Sunday mornings were received with great enthusiasm. Swamiji conducted
Jnana Yajnas in the Bay area reaching hundreds of people.
In late 1993, Swami Tejomayananda returned to India to become the new head of Chinmaya
Mission after the Maha Samadhi of Pujya Swami Chinmayananda. Swami Tejomayananda
studied under Pujya Gurudev, Swami Chinmayananda for many years. He taught
Vedanta to Brahmacharies in Sandeepany Himalayas in Sidhabari and at
Sandeepany Sadhanalaya in Bombay. Many of Swamiji's students are now teaching
in India and abroad.
Programs for children, Bala Vihar, started in 1981 with
eight children and four families using a rented facility in Los Altos. Since then we
have grown each year, and today we have 500 families and over 700 children participating
in our classes. Classes are held in three locations, Los Altos, San Jose and San
Ramon. All our teachers are volunteers and their dedicated work each week has made
all this work possible. Their tireless efforts and innovative ideas are attracting
parents to bring their children to them so that the Hindu Culture can be shared with
the next generation.
Gita and Ramayana Yajnas have been held in the Bay Area and have been conducted by both Swami
Tejomayananda and Swami Nikhilananda. The Mission also has sponsored both weekend Retreats at Sandeepany San Jose,
and Residential Camps at Krishnalaya in Piercy. Swami Tejomayananda and Swami Nikhilananda
conduct these camps throughout the year.
Major festivals are also celebrated at Sandeepany throughout the year, with pujas
conducted by Pandit Ravichandran. Some of the festivals celebrated are Shivaratri,
Swami Chinmayananda's Birthday, Ramanavami,
Krishna Janmashtami, Guru Purnima, Navaratri, Deepavali, Gita Jayanti and Tapovanam
Day. Second Monday of every month, Shiva Abhisheka and puja are conducted by Subbu
Venkatakrishnan, an ardent devottee and an executive Committee member of Chinmaya
Mission San Jose. These functions are open to public.
Chinmaya Mission San Jose takes part in the Homeless Feeding program once every quarter.
Members volunteer to visit the Homeless shelter in San Jose and prepare food and
serve lunch to all who need a meal. Those who wish to contribute towards this effort
or wish to help to serve may call Sri Krisna Bhambre at (408)733-4612.
We invite you and your family to take part in the classes offered for you and your
family.
